Statement Regarding the Filing of Signatures to Put the Human Embryo Stem Cell Issue on the November Statewide Ballot

LANSING, Mich., July 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Please attribute the
following statement to Dave Doyle, Spokesman for Michigan Citizens Against
Unrestricted Science and Experimentation:

"This proposal is deliberately deceptive. Lawyers and politicians
intentionally drafted this language to mislead the voters. This proposal
will allow unregulated and unrestricted experimentation on human embryos.

This proposal does not ban human cloning in the State Constitution. The
proposal states that nothing shall be interpreted to alter or abrogate the
current law banning cloning. However, bills have already been introduced in
the Michigan legislature to allow for human cloning. This proposal will
permit the legalization of cloning.

Voters should not be deceived by this proposal. It will allow for
unregulated, unrestricted experimentation on human embryos.

This proposal would allow researchers to ignore any law that would
prevent, restrict or regulate the destruction of human embryos.

Human embryonic stem cell research is already legal in Michigan and has
been conducted in Michigan for years. It continues today at the University
of Michigan Center for Human Embryo Stem Cell Research and other Michigan
universities. This proposal will allow for unregulated and unrestricted
research."
